NEW MILLER COUNTY RESIDENTS
IMPORTANT TAX INFORMATION
The tax collection system used in Missouri can be confusing.  The following information about taxes should be helpful to
you as a new Missouri resident, and therefore a new taxpayer in Miller County.
What kind of tax is collected at the County Collector's office?

The Collector is responsible for the collection of two different kinds of tax.
1.
Personal Property Tax (taxable items include licensed motorized vehicles, boats, boat
motors, trailers, mobile homes, livestock, some farm machinery, etc.)
You must show a paid
personal property tax receipt before the license bureau will allow you to license or re-license a
vehicle anywhere in the State of Missouri!!!

2.  Real Estate Tax (includes land and all permanently attached improvements.)
How do I know if I owe either of these taxes?

Personal Property Tax
If you own personal property in Miller County on January 1st then you will owe tax for that year.
The tax payment is due by December 31st and the same procedure applies each year thereafter
as long as you own personal property in said county.

Real Estate Tax
If you purchase real estate in Miller County at any time during the year then you will owe real
estate tax for that year.  The tax payment is due by December 31st and again on the same
date each year thereafter for as long as you own the real estate.
What generates a tax bill as a reminder for me to pay?

Personal Property Tax
YOU must report what taxable personal property you own directly to the Miller County Assessor
no later than March 1st yearly (state law).  The assessment sheet you complete generates the
tax bill which is
mailed to the address you report on the form.

Real Estate Tax
The recording of your deed will automatically generate a tax bill.  However, when ownership changes
occur after July 1st the tax bill for the first year will most likely be printed and mailed to the previous
owner.
If this happens, it is your responsibility to obtain the tax bill information.  The Collector's
office will be happy to assist you if they are made aware of the misdirected bill.  (Call 573-369-1925)
